The beginnings of Kawatsura lacquerware go back to the Kamakura period, when lord Michinori, the brother of Onodera Shigemichi (lord of Inaniwa Castle and served Minamoto-no-Yoritomo), ordered his retainers to take up lacquering weaponry such as sword sheaths, arrows, and armor.
