Akita Kanto Festival, August 3 through 6 – Summer Festivals in Tohoku, vol.17

No luxury floats or portable shrines, but bamboo poles and lanterns, drums and flutes for festival music as well as festival costumes of short coat, robe made of paper mulberry fiber and face towel would do. Every year, more than 1.3 million people in such simple attire go wild with excitement over the Kanto Festival. They liken a bamboo pole with a weight of 50 kg and a length of 12 meters to a rice ear, and 46 lanterns on it to bags of rice. Bamboo bearers show off their technic by moving the pole or holding it on his palm, forehead, shoulder, or waist to fascinate the audience. Summer is just around the corner.
