Sansa Odori Dance Festival, August 1 through 4 – Summer Festivals in Tohoku, vol.12

The origin of dance is the origin of Iwate. A legend says that a deity arrested a demon and pressed his hand pattern on a rock to prevent it from playing evil again; it’s how Iwate (“rock hand” in Japanese) was formed. Knowing the demon won’t come back, people were relieved and started dancing around the rock in the manner of “sansa, sansa”. That’s the history of the first Sansa Odori Dance Festival, although an extremely short version! You can join “wagiri” in ordinary clothes, part of the festival that is listed in the Guinness World Record as “the most Japanese drums playing simultaneously”. The world-recognized drum parade would move the audience with its sound.
