The Yamagata Hanagasa Matsuri (山形花笠まつり) is considered one of the great festivals of the Tohoku area. Unlike the other festivals in the Tohoku region this one has a rather short history. It was established in 1964. Hanagasa are hats covered in fake safflowers and dancers in the festival wear them as the dance and parade through out Yamagata City. This year the festival will be held on August 5th through the 7th. Make Tohoku your next stop during your summer visit in Japan.
Access: With a JR Pass ride a 2 hour and 42 min Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Yamagata Station.
