Ouchi-jyuku used to be a post town along the road which connected Nikko and Aizu-wakamatsu called the Shimotsuke Kaido. It flourished as an important center for the transport of goods as well as witnessing processions of feudal lords from the Aizu domain who periodically traveled to and from Edo as a consequence of the Sankin Kotai system.
